Andrew Garfield on Tom Holland and Tobey Maguire: A ‘Weird Brotherhood’

• Andrew Garfield, 43, told Amy Poehler on Good Hang, out Tuesday, Sept. 29, that Spider-Man: No Way Home “cemented some kind of weird brotherhood” with Tom Holland and Tobey Maguire.

Andrew Garfield, 43, says playing Spider-Man alongside the two other actors who wore the suit left him with something he did not expect: a brotherhood.

He said it on Good Hang with Amy Poehler, the podcast from The Ringer and Spotify, in an episode released on Tuesday, Sept. 29. The same day, his new movie, The Uprising, came out on digital.

What did Andrew Garfield say about Tom Holland and Tobey Maguire?

The subject came up about 47 minutes in. Amy Poehler, 55, asked whether he had hosted Saturday Night Live during his Spider-Man years (“I think it was the second Spider-Man,” he said), then mentioned that she’d had Tom Holland on the show in June.

Poehler said she loved how the Spider-Man actors show up for one another and talk about each other, and Garfield picked up the thought.

“Doing the one where we’re all together really cemented some kind of weird brotherhood that was just beautiful,” he said, meaning No Way Home, the 2021 film that put all three Peter Parkers on screen at once.

I had known Tobey a little bit before, but he was always my, you know, my north star with that character. And I loved what Tom’s done. And I think that was very healing for all of us to do that together and to feel less alone in that very, very weird, singular experience.

That experience, he went on, is being part of the legacy of “arguably one of, if not the most popular fictional character in the history of, like, modern fiction.” Poehler agreed and said her sons, now 16 and almost 18, grew up wanting to move like the character. Here is the full episode.

How did three Spider-Men end up in the same movie?

Sony Pictures holds the film rights to Spider-Man, which is why the character has been rebooted twice in 20 years. Tobey Maguire, now 51, played Peter Parker in Sam Raimi’s trilogy (2002, 2004 and 2007). Garfield took over in Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) and its 2014 sequel.

Holland, 30, arrived after Sony agreed to share the character with Marvel Studios, which put Peter Parker inside the Avengers films. He debuted in Captain America: Civil War (2016) and has since led four solo films, the latest being Spider-Man: Brand New Day, released July 31.

No Way Home, directed by Jon Watts, used a multiverse story to bring Maguire and Garfield back beside Holland. Garfield spent months before its December 2021 release denying he was in it. The film made more than $1.9 billion worldwide.

What is The Uprising about, and where can you watch it?

The Uprising, written and directed by Paul Greengrass, is set during the Peasants’ Revolt of 1381 in England. Garfield plays the leader of a rebellion against King Richard II, in the true events that Focus Features says helped inspire the legend of Robin Hood.

“It’s about true events in that period of British history,” Garfield told Poehler, calling Greengrass, the director of Captain Phillips and United 93, “one of my favorite directors of all time.” The villain, he said, is “a boy king.” Richard II was 14 in 1381.

The cast includes Jamie Bell, Stephen Dillane, Tom Hollander, Cosmo Jarvis, Thomasin McKenzie, Jonny Lee Miller, Woody Norman and Katherine Waterston. Garfield shot it around Munich, which is where the episode’s running joke about German felt comes from.

What’s next for Andrew Garfield?

He plays OpenAI CEO Sam Altman in Artificial, a Luca Guadagnino film written by Simon Rich. It premieres at the New York Film Festival on Oct. 5, and Neon opens it in select theaters on Christmas Day.

Lin-Manuel Miranda, who directed Garfield in tick, tick… BOOM! and opened the episode as the friend who knows the guest, brought up the peasant revolt, and he and Poehler marveled at the jump from that to Sam Altman.
