Glee Reboot: Who’s Coming Back, Who Isn’t and Where to Watch

Disney+ and Hulu ordered a new Glee from Ryan Murphy, and Lea Michele is reportedly back as Rachel Berry. Here's where every original star stands, what a series order means and where to stream all six seasons now.

  • Disney+ and Hulu ordered a Glee reboot from co-creator Ryan Murphy; the show’s official Instagram confirmed it on Wednesday, Oct. 21.
  • Lea Michele is reportedly returning as Rachel Berry. No other cast member has been officially announced, and there is no premiere date.
  • Murphy said in September that the script is done and that he had talked to “around 10” of the original stars.

Glee is coming back. Disney+ and Hulu gave a series order to a reboot of the musical comedy that ran for six seasons on Fox, from 2009 to 2015, and the show’s official Instagram confirmed the news on Wednesday, Oct. 21, with the caption “Currently gleeking out!”

The new version comes from 20th Television, the studio behind the original, and from its three creators: Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan. Disney hasn’t named any cast or story details.

Is Glee really coming back?

Yes. A series order means Disney+ and Hulu committed to a run of episodes without first testing a pilot. Casting and production come next, and that is the stage the reboot is in now.

Murphy had been teasing it for months. In July, he told People that “so many young people now watch it,” and that maybe it was time to “revisit that show.” By September, he told Entertainment Tonight the script was finished.

I’ve been in touch with around 10 of the original cast members. It’s very sweet, and they all had a lot of questions, but they all were very enthusiastic about the idea.

The original still has an audience. It streams on Hulu, and Disney said the show’s music draws about 4 million monthly listeners on Spotify. Glee won six Emmys, including Murphy’s first, for directing the pilot.

Who is coming back to the Glee reboot?

Only one return has been reported with any certainty: Lea Michele, who played Rachel Berry in all six seasons. Disney hasn’t confirmed it. Here is where every main cast member stands as of Oct. 21.

Kevin McHale had said before that he shouldn’t play a character who uses a wheelchair again, which is why his answer to People stood out. Chris Colfer has focused on writing best-selling children’s books since the show ended.

Which Glee cast members have died?

Three of the original stars: Cory Monteith, who played Finn and was Lea Michele’s partner at the time, died in 2013; Mark Salling died in 2018; and Naya Rivera died in 2020.

Colfer said the losses weigh on any return. “It was a really tough show to do, and it would be really hard to do it now that Naya [Rivera] is gone,” he told Bustle this month, before adding that fans “would probably come after me with pitchforks and jazz hands if I said no.”

When does the Glee reboot come out, and where can you watch it?

There is no premiere date, and no production start has been announced. The reboot will stream on Disney+ and Hulu. All six original seasons are on Hulu now, from the 2009 pilot to the 2015 finale.
