Harlan Coben is having the kind of fall most novelists never get. His first memoir came out this month, his latest Netflix adaptation just climbed into the streamer’s all-time top five, and his true-crime series returns to CBS on Oct. 5.
The New Jersey thriller writer has 100 million books in print, according to his publisher, and more than 20 TV and film adaptations of his work.
What is Harlan Coben’s new book, Plot Twist?
Plot Twist: Life, Craft, and the Messy First Draft is a memoir about writing, published by Grand Central Publishing on Sept. 8. The hardcover runs 320 pages and lists at $32.50.
It is his first book about himself. Coben goes back to his suburban childhood and his early years trying to break into publishing, and explains the real-world inspirations behind some of his best-known characters, according to the publisher’s description.
It is also a how-to. The publisher says he drops the usual writing-class categories, like character, plot and setting, and treats the process as a whole. His rule, as quoted by the publisher, is simple: “If it helps me produce pages, good. If it doesn’t, bad.”
Why is I Will Find You breaking Netflix records?
I Will Find You, based on Coben’s novel of the same name, premiered on Netflix on June 18. Sam Worthington stars as David, a father serving a life sentence for killing his son who gets evidence that the boy may still be alive, with Britt Lower and Milo Ventimiglia.
On Netflix’s all-time list of its most popular English-language shows, it now sits at No. 5 with 120.8 million views, ahead of Wednesday Season 2 and behind Stranger Things 5.
How Netflix counts: a “view” is the total hours watched divided by the show’s runtime, and the all-time list only counts each title’s first 91 days. That keeps a new limited series on even footing with a hit that has been streaming for years.
When does Harlan Coben’s Final Twist Season 2 start?
Season 2 premieres on Monday, Oct. 5, from 10 to 11 p.m. ET/PT on CBS and streams on Paramount+. Unlike his Netflix shows, Final Twist is not fiction: it is a documentary series in which Coben, as host, walks through real crimes with interviews and archival footage.
The first season, five episodes, ran from Jan. 7 to Feb. 3, and CBS renewed it in April. The Season 2 premiere covers the death of Betsy Faria in Missouri. In CBS’s description, it looked like an open-and-shut case until “more dead bodies and strange twists” led back to her murder.
Coben talked about how the series works when the first season launched in January.
