Law & Order Kills Off Reid Scott’s Det. Riley: Why the Actor Left
Det. Vincent Riley was shot off duty in Season 26, Episode 2, Reid Scott's last. How it happened, who was convicted, why Scott chose to go, and who takes his place in the 27th Precinct.

- Det. Vincent Riley was shot twice in the chest and died in “Into the Mystic,” Season 26, Episode 2 of Law & Order, which aired Thursday, Oct. 15, on NBC.
- It was Reid Scott‘s final episode. He chose to leave because of the cross-country commute: he is based in California, and the show films in New York.
- James Badge Dale joins as senior detective Rob Calvino, and Ryan Eggold came back as Riley’s brother, Matt.
Law & Order has killed off Det. Vincent Riley. Reid Scott‘s detective was shot on a New York street while chasing a lead off the clock, in the second episode of Season 26, his last after three seasons in the 27th Precinct.
Showrunner Rick Eid had promised TV Insider “a memorable exit” before the season, and said “the genesis for the idea may have come from Reid himself.”
How did Riley die on Law & Order?
The episode opens with Riley at his desk late at night. Something clicks, and he goes looking for a man named Ray Biller. He leaves a message for A.D.A. Nolan Price (Hugh Dancy), “Need to talk to you right away,” and texts his partner, Det. Theo Walker (David Ajala), for backup.
Outside a bar, Riley calls out to Biller and identifies himself. Biller turns and shoots him twice in the chest. Riley was off duty and not wearing a vest. Walker arrives to find him bleeding on the sidewalk: “Vince, stay with me, come on!”

At the hospital, a doctor tells Walker and Lt. Jessica Brady (Maura Tierney) that Riley could not be saved. Walker had not been able to reach Riley’s wife, Tara.
Who killed Riley, and was he convicted?
The squad traced the shooting to Ray Biller, whose brother, Wayne, had been sent to prison by Price for rape and murder and was stabbed to death there a week earlier. The bar was three blocks from Price’s apartment. The theory the episode lands on: Biller was hunting Price, and Riley got in the way.
Walker was kept off the case because Riley was his partner. Brady brought in a new senior detective, Rob Calvino (James Badge Dale), to run it. They arrested Biller at his brother’s funeral. With no murder weapon, D.A. Nicholas Baxter (Tony Goldwyn) tried the case himself.

Ryan Eggold returned as Matt Riley, Vince’s brother, and pushed Walker to say he had seen the shooter’s face. Walker testified that he did, though he had told Price he never got a good look. The jury convicted Biller of first-degree murder, and the episode left open whether Walker told the truth.
Vince didn’t pick and choose going to be a hero or when to do the right thing. That’s just who he was and how he was.

The episode closed with Riley’s name added to the NYPD Wall of Honor, with his wife and two children in the crowd.
Why did Reid Scott leave Law & Order?
It was his call. When the exit was reported in July, the reason given was the strain of commuting across the country and spending about nine months a year away from his family in California while the show shoots in New York.
He was believed to have one more year left on his contract, and the split was described as amicable.
Cast changes are routine on Law & Order, where the squad turns over almost every year and the format stays. Scott joined in Season 23 to replace Jeffrey Donovan’s Det. Frank Cosgrove, and his first partner, Mehcad Brooks’s Det. Jalen Shaw, left in 2025.
Before Law & Order, Scott was best known as Dan Egan on HBO’s Veep.
Who replaces Reid Scott on Law & Order?
James Badge Dale, of 1923, Hightown and 13 Hours. His Calvino is the squad’s new senior detective, so Walker gets a new partner. Law & Order airs Thursdays at 10 p.m. ET on NBC, after Law & Order: SVU, and streams the next day on Peacock.
