The One About Matthew Perry: Netflix Release Date, Episodes and Who Appears

• The One About Matthew Perry, a three-part Netflix docuseries, premieres Tuesday, Oct. 27, the day before the third anniversary of his death.

Matthew Perry is getting his first in-depth documentary. The One About Matthew Perry, a three-part series, premieres on Netflix on Tuesday, Oct. 27, the day before the third anniversary of his death. Netflix released the trailer on Sept. 29.

The series is told by the people who knew him before and after Friends: his sister, the two best friends he had for more than 40 years, the NBC executive who greenlit the show, and the federal prosecutor who led the case over the ketamine that killed him.

When does The One About Matthew Perry come out?

All three episodes arrive on Netflix on Oct. 27. The series is directed by Emmy winner Mary Robertson and produced by Maxine Productions, part of Sony Pictures Television.

“Yet the public only knew part of his story,” Robertson said in Netflix’s announcement. “That’s why we set out to make this series: to let the people who knew and loved Matthew reveal the person behind the public figure.”

Netflix says the series traces his path from rising comic actor to Chandler Bing, 236 episodes from 1994 to 2004, with new details on the private struggles behind the addiction he spoke about openly.

Who is interviewed in The One About Matthew Perry?

The anchor is his younger sister, Mia Perry Bowick. She grew up with him in Los Angeles and became a licensed psychotherapist, according to Netflix, partly to understand his addiction. This is the first time she has talked about him on camera.

It’s taken time for me to feel ready to share these memories and what it was like to love Matthew through all the complexity of his life — to see him as a whole person, not just as Chandler, and not just as someone who struggled with addiction.

• Jonathan Lynn, who directed Perry and Bruce Willis in The Whole Nine Yards.
• Doug Draizin, producer of Fools Rush In, loosely based on his own life.
• René Ashton, an actor who was his girlfriend in the late ’90s.
• Nate Torrence, his co-star on Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip and Mr. Sunshine.
• Tim Harrington, who met him at a recovery meeting in 2001, later became his roommate and says Perry saved his life.

Is the Friends cast in the Matthew Perry documentary?

Not on camera, as far as Netflix has said. Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc and David Schwimmer are not on the list of interviewees. The trailer does use scenes from the show.

Friends is represented instead by the people behind it: Littlefield, who put it on NBC, and Strauss, from the writers’ room of the first season.

How did Matthew Perry die?

Perry was found dead in the hot tub at his Los Angeles home on Oct. 28, 2023. He was 54. The Los Angeles County medical examiner ruled the death an accident caused by the acute effects of ketamine.

In 2024, federal prosecutors charged five people, including two doctors and his live-in assistant, with supplying the ketamine. All five pleaded guilty. The dealer known as the “Ketamine Queen,” Jasveen Sangha, was sentenced to 15 years in April; his assistant, Kenneth Iwamasa, got nearly three and a half years in May.

Before his death, Perry had written about his addiction in his 2022 memoir, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing, and had pushed for drug courts, which send people charged with drug crimes to treatment instead of prison. That advocacy is one of the threads of the series.
