Chad Lowe and Kim Painter’s Daughter Fiona Dies at 13: ‘Light of Our Lives’

• Fiona Lowe, the 13-year-old daughter of actor Chad Lowe and his wife, Kim Painter, has died, the family said in a statement on Tuesday, Sept. 29.
• The family remembered her as a “smart, creative” girl who “loved to dance” and called her “the light of our lives.” No cause of death was shared.

Fiona Lowe, the daughter of actor Chad Lowe, 58, and his wife, Kim Painter, has died at 13, the family said in a statement released on the evening of Tuesday, Sept. 29.

Fiona was the second of the couple’s three daughters, between Mabel, 17, and Nixie, 10. Her uncle is Rob Lowe, 62, Chad’s older brother.

“We are deeply heartbroken by the loss of our beloved Fiona,” the statement began. It described her as “a loving young girl who was smart, creative and loved to dance.”

She was adored by her sisters and she was deeply loved by her parents. In fact, she was the light of our lives.

How did Fiona Lowe die?

The family has not shared a cause of death. The statement also did not say when or where Fiona died.

Who was Fiona Lowe?

Fiona was born in November 2012, two years after her parents married in August 2010. Mabel was born in May 2009 and Nixie in March 2016.

Dance runs through what her father wrote about her. For her 12th birthday, in November 2024, he posted on Instagram: “One of my greatest joys is watching this girl dance her way through life! Happy 12th birthday Fi Bear!! You are so deeply loved!!”

A year later he marked her 13th: “Celebrating Fiona officially becoming a teen today!! Keep dancing through life FiBear! Love you soooo much!!”

The family also lost its home in Pacific Palisades to the January 2025 wildfire. Almost a month after they evacuated, Chad took his daughters back to see what was left and shared photos of the ruins.

“The way they’ve handled this whole devastating experience is nothing short of remarkable,” he wrote at the time. “Being their dad is my life’s greatest joy and privilege.”

What has Chad Lowe said about being a “girl dad”?

He talked about raising three daughters in a December 2025 interview on Still Here Hollywood, the podcast hosted by Steve Kmetko.

“I get the experience of being a girl dad, which is such a privilege,” he said. Talking about the struggles women face, he added: “It’s taken what I’ve known intellectually and it’s put it in my heart, because I now have three daughters.”

“I see the world and a lot of the injustices in the world from their perspective,” he said, “but I also see all the opportunities that are there now too.”

Who is Chad Lowe?

Chad Lowe was born in Dayton, Ohio, on Jan. 15, 1968. He won an Emmy in 1993 for playing Jesse McKenna, a teenager living with HIV, on ABC’s Life Goes On.

He went on to play Dr. George Henry on ER, Reed Pollock on the sixth season of 24 and, from 2010 to 2017, Byron Montgomery, Aria’s father, on Pretty Little Liars.

These days he works mostly as a director, with more than 60 TV episodes to his name, among them Pretty Little Liars, Bones, The Flash and the 9-1-1 franchise.

On his podcast Literally! in 2022, Rob Lowe called his brother “one of the leading television directors” and noted that Chad directed the first episode of 9-1-1: Lone Star written by Rob’s son, John Owen Lowe.

Before Painter, Chad was married to Hilary Swank, from 1997 to 2007.
