The dog lives. Odin, the retired combat dog in Heart of the Beast, survives the film, which opened in theaters on Friday (Sept. 25). Producer Richard Raymond confirmed it on X.

Brad Pitt, 62, plays James Belmont, a retired Army Special Forces veteran stranded in the Alaskan wilderness with Odin after their seaplane goes down. The rest of this story has spoilers.

Does Odin die in ‘Heart of the Beast’?

No. The movie opens with a flash-forward in which Odin, alone, is found alive by a young woman. Everything after that is the story of how he got there.

He does not get there unhurt. James and Odin cross forests, rivers and mountains on a 58-mile trek toward help, and both are badly injured along the way. The film treats the dog as a second lead with his own combat trauma, not as a sidekick.

Does Brad Pitt’s character die in ‘Heart of the Beast’?

Yes. James does not survive the final stretch. Badly hurt near the end, he uses what strength he has left to make sure Odin will be found and will have a life after him.

Who plays Odin in ‘Heart of the Beast’?

Director David Ayer, who made Fury with Pitt in 2014, joked that Uber had his own hair, makeup and wardrobe teams and stunt doubles. His one quirk, Ayer said, was chasing bees, which could cost the crew a take.

What happens to military dogs when they retire?

In the movie, Odin lives with James after both leave the Army. In real life, that arrangement is only about 25 years old. Until 2000, retired military working dogs could not be adopted, and many were euthanized when their service ended.

That changed with Robby’s Law, signed by President Bill Clinton in 2000 and named for a Belgian Malinois who was too old to work. It opened retired dogs to adoption: law enforcement agencies first, then former handlers, then the public.

The defense bill signed in November 2015 went further. Dogs retired overseas could still be left there, so it requires them to be brought back to the U.S. and gives their former handlers the first right to adopt them — the path James and Odin would have taken.

The Defense Department runs adoptions through its dog program at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, Texas.

Is ‘Heart of the Beast’ good?

Critics mostly say yes. It holds 88% positive reviews from 103 critics on Rotten Tomatoes and a 68 on Metacritic. J.K. Simmons and Anna Lambe co-star; the film runs 101 minutes. Heart of the Beast is in theaters now.
