Is ‘Unabomber’ a True Story? What’s Real in Netflix’s Ted Kaczynski Movie

• Yes, in part. Unabomber is built on the real Ted Kaczynski case, including a Harvard psychology study he took part in as a teenager, but the FBI agent at the center of the manhunt is invented.

Unabomber, Netflix’s new drama about Ted Kaczynski, arrived on the streamer on Friday (Sept. 25) with Jacob Tremblay, 19, as the teenage math prodigy and Russell Crowe, 62, as the Harvard professor who put him through a psychological study.

The film bills itself as “inspired by true events.” Its framework is real. Its lead investigator is not, and the link it draws between Harvard and the bombings is the part historians still argue about.

Is ‘Unabomber’ based on a true story?

Yes. Directed by Janus Metz, the film runs on two timelines: Kaczynski at Harvard, where he enrolled in 1958 at 16, and the FBI’s hunt for the bomber in the 1990s. The main cast:

• Jacob Tremblay as young Ted Kaczynski
• Russell Crowe as Henry Murray, the Harvard psychologist
• Annabelle Wallis as Christiana Morgan, Murray’s real-life collaborator
• Shailene Woodley as FBI agent Joanne Miller, a fictional character

“A lot of people don’t know this,” Tremblay told CBS Mornings, “but yeah, Ted Kaczynski went to Harvard at 16.” He said his research focused on Kaczynski’s motives and “what drove him to do what he did.”

Was the Harvard experiment real?

Yes. From 1959 to 1962, Kaczynski was one of 22 Harvard undergraduates in a study run by Henry A. Murray, a pioneer of personality research.

Students wrote an essay laying out their personal philosophy, then sat under bright lights, wired to monitors, while a law student attacked those beliefs. The sessions were filmed and later played back to them.

Kaczynski’s code name in the study was “Lawful.” By historian Alston Chase‘s count, he spent about 200 hours as a subject. His full Harvard file has never been made public.

Crowe told Entertainment Tonight he saw Murray as a man from “old family money” with “a total disregard for the health of the people that he’s dealing with.” He also pointed out that Kaczynski himself “completely denied any connection” between the study and his later actions.

What does ‘Unabomber’ make up?

The agent. Woodley’s Joanne Miller did not exist. She stands in for the FBI’s UNABOM task force, the multi-agency team that worked the case for 17 years. The name came from the bomber’s early targets: universities and airlines.

The cause. The film suggests the Harvard sessions unlocked what Kaczynski became. That link has been debated for decades and was never proven; Kaczynski rejected it. Metz has said the film “takes creative liberties with gaps in the historical record.”

The conversations. No transcripts of Kaczynski and Murray’s exchanges exist, so their scenes together are dramatized. Reviewers also noted that the true story of how Kaczynski was caught, through his brother, stays in the background.

How was the real Unabomber caught?

Through his family. In 1995 the bomber demanded that major newspapers print his 35,000-word manifesto, “Industrial Society and Its Future.” The Washington Post published it on Sept. 19, 1995, with support from Attorney General Janet Reno and FBI Director Louis Freeh.

Linda Patrik recognized the ideas. She urged her husband, David Kaczynski, Ted’s younger brother, to compare the manifesto with Ted’s old letters, and David went to the FBI through a lawyer in early 1996.

Agents arrested Kaczynski at his cabin near Lincoln, Montana, on April 3, 1996, and found bomb components and handwritten journals inside. In January 1998 he pleaded guilty, avoiding a possible death sentence, and was sentenced to life in prison without parole.

He died in June 2023, at 81, at the federal prison medical center in Butner, North Carolina. The state medical examiner ruled his death a suicide.
