Why Was ‘Sweet Magnolias’ Canceled? Netflix Ends Show After 5 Seasons

• Netflix canceled Sweet Magnolias on Friday, Sept. 18, after five seasons and 50 episodes. There will be no Season 6.
• At the same time, it ordered Ladies of the House, a new drama from showrunner Sheryl J. Anderson starring JoAnna Garcia Swisher.
• Viewership had been sliding: Season 5 drew 8.3 million views in its first three weeks, down from 15.5 million for Season 2.

Last call in Serenity. Netflix has canceled Sweet Magnolias after five seasons, closing the book on the small-town South Carolina drama on Friday, Sept. 18.

The news came with a trade-off. The same day, Netflix ordered a new series from the show’s team, Ladies of the House, with JoAnna Garcia Swisher starring and executive producing.

Why was ‘Sweet Magnolias’ canceled?

It came down to a choice between two shows, Deadline first reported: a sixth and final season of Sweet Magnolias, or Ladies of the House. Netflix picked the new one.

The ratings made the choice easier. Season 5 premiered June 11 and pulled 2.8 million views in its first week, about 30% below the Season 4 premiere week.

Netflix hasn’t explained the decision beyond the announcement.

How much did ‘Sweet Magnolias’ viewership drop?

The steepest fall came a season earlier than the headlines suggest. Here’s how many views each season drew in its first three weeks, per Netflix’s own Top 10 data:

• Season 2 (2022): 15.5 million views
• Season 3 (2023): 12.8 million views
• Season 4 (2025): 8.5 million views
• Season 5 (2026): 8.3 million views

Season 4 lost a third of Season 3’s audience. Season 5 held nearly steady after that, but it didn’t win anyone back.

A Netflix “view” isn’t a person. The company divides total hours watched by the season’s runtime, so a viewer who watches half a season counts as half a view.

That matters for older shows. Each new season also tends to cost more than the last, as cast and crew contracts come up for renegotiation. A flat audience with a rising bill is the pattern that usually ends a streaming series.

Will there be a ‘Sweet Magnolias’ Season 6?

No. The cancellation means Season 5’s storylines stay where they ended. Showrunner Sheryl J. Anderson has said the writers always tried to pair emotional payoffs with the cliffhangers, so each season had some closure.

The show ran from May 2020 to 2026, adapted from Sherryl Woods‘ novels. It followed three lifelong friends in Serenity, S.C.: Maddie (Swisher), Dana Sue (Brooke Elliott) and Helen (Heather Headley).

What is ‘Ladies of the House’ on Netflix?

A modern take on Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility, based on Lauren Edmondson’s novel. It follows a mother and her two adult daughters trying to save the family winery after its owner dies unexpectedly.

Anderson is the showrunner, and Swisher leads the cast. Netflix hasn’t announced a premiere date.
