Matthew Rhys Says Dustin Hoffman Snubbed Him Backstage in 2000

A 26-year-old grudge, told by a man holding two new Emmys. Matthew Rhys, 51, said Dustin Hoffman came to see him play the role Hoffman made famous — and then went home without saying a word.

Rhys told the story on the Why Are You More Successful Than Me? podcast, hosted by Richard Bacon, in an episode released on Wednesday, Sept. 17.

Why did Dustin Hoffman snub Matthew Rhys?

Rhys does not know, and that is the whole point of the story. Hoffman was in the audience at the Gielgud Theatre in London, where Rhys was playing Benjamin Braddock in a stage version of The Graduate.

Hoffman originated that character on screen in 1967, at 29, playing a 21-year-old. Rhys was 25 when the London production opened on April 5, 2000.

He had been told to expect a visit. Kathleen Turner, who played Mrs. Robinson opposite him, had explained that famous actors often stop backstage after a performance even when they do not know anyone in the cast.

“Oh my God, he’s going to come, he’ll come backstage!” Rhys recalled thinking. “And he never came.”

What did Matthew Rhys say about it?

That he filled the silence himself, the way actors do.

I just thought he must have sat there going, “Well, he was s—.” It’s every actor’s insecurity because we’re so wildly self-obsessed.

Bacon asked whether it had bothered him. “Wildly,” Rhys said.

Hoffman, 89, has not responded publicly to the story. There is no indication he knew Rhys was waiting, and Rhys did not say the two have spoken since.

In 2000, in the West End. Terry Johnson adapted and directed the stage version, which opened at the Gielgud on April 5 with Turner as Mrs. Robinson.

The production was a ticket event in London that spring, and Rhys was a Welsh actor barely out of drama school carrying the male lead. The pressure in the story is not invented afterward — it is why he was watching the stage door.

How many Emmys has Matthew Rhys won?

Four. He won lead actor in a drama for The Americans in 2018, then took lead actor in a comedy and lead actor in a limited series on Sept. 14, plus a producer share of the comedy series win for the show that broke the Emmy comedy record.

No performer had previously won a lead acting Emmy in drama, comedy and limited series. He is now the only one.
