‘Widow’s Bay’ Wins 14 Emmys, the Most Ever for a Comedy Series
Six wins on the telecast, eight at the Creative Arts ceremony, a broken record and a first for Matthew Rhys — how the Apple TV island comedy took over the 78th Emmys.

A cursed island took the whole night. Widow’s Bay, the Apple TV horror-comedy about a mayor trying to sell tourists on a haunted town, won 14 Emmys — more than any comedy series has ever won in one year.
Six came at the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards on Monday, Sept. 14, at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, hosted by Mariska Hargitay. The other eight came at the Creative Arts ceremonies held the weekend before.
Why did Widow’s Bay sweep the Emmys?
Because it did not lose a single major comedy category. On the telecast it took outstanding comedy series, lead actor (Matthew Rhys), supporting actor (Stephen Root), supporting actress (Kate O’Flynn), directing (Hiro Murai) and writing (Katie Dippold).
That is the full set of the six comedy prizes handed out on the live show. A comedy cannot do better on telecast night, which is why the remaining eight had to come from somewhere else.
Dippold, who wrote for Parks and Recreation, spent close to two decades developing the pilot before Apple picked it up. She thanked the company from the stage for “letting us take this crazy, creative swing.”
The show was not a launch-week phenomenon. It premiered on April 29 and released weekly through June, building by word of mouth across the spring — the same slow climb that carried other streaming hits past the algorithm.
How does a show win 14 Emmys in one year?
By winning almost everywhere except the room people watch. The Emmys are two ceremonies, not one, and both totals count toward the number in the headline.
The Creative Arts Emmys run across the weekend before the telecast and hand out roughly 100 awards: casting, editing, cinematography, production design, costumes, hairstyling, sound, music supervision, main title design, guest acting. They are the crafts, and there are far more of them.
The televised ceremony carries about 25 categories — the series, acting, writing and directing races for comedy, drama and limited. A comedy can win at most six of those.

So the arithmetic of a record is fixed: six from the telecast, eight from the crafts. A show that sweeps the acting races but loses production design and editing does not reach 14.
Voting works in two stages. Television Academy members nominate inside their own branch — actors nominate actors, editors nominate editors — and then the full eligible membership votes on the winners.
That structure is why craft-heavy shows run up totals. A haunted-island comedy with practical effects, period-looking sets and a heavy score gives the crafts branches a lot to vote for.
What record did Matthew Rhys set?
Rhys, 51, became the first performer to win a lead acting Emmy in all three genres. He won drama for The Americans in 2018, then took comedy for Widow’s Bay and limited series for The Beast in Me on the same night.
He was reported to have carried three statuettes out of the Peacock Theater, counting his producer share of the comedy series win.
The sweep also came five days before Rhys made headlines again for something much smaller: a snub he is still thinking about from 2000. More on him at Matthew Rhys.
What is Widow’s Bay about and where can you watch it?
Rhys plays Tom Loftis, the mayor of a small island town off the New England coast who wants to turn it into the next Nantucket. The locals keep telling him the island is cursed. They are right.
All episodes stream on Apple TV. The first season ran from April 29 to June, and neither Apple nor Dippold has announced a second.
The take: the number that matters is not 14, it is the nomination count. A show has to be seen by the crafts branches to be nominated across them, and Widow’s Bay got there on a spring release with no awards-season push behind it.
The record says less about a weak comedy field than about what weekly episodes still do for a show people argue about in between.
