Susan Sarandon and Hannah Einbinder Detained at Anti-Netanyahu Protest

• Susan Sarandon, Hannah Einbinder and Caleb Hearon were among 103 people the NYPD took into custody at a sit-in near the United Nations on Thursday, Sept. 24.
• All 103 got summonses for disorderly conduct and were released. In New York that is a violation, a step below a misdemeanor.
• It is at least the third time Sarandon, 79, has been arrested at a protest, after 1999 and 2018.

Zip ties on First Avenue. Susan Sarandon, 79, and Hacks star Hannah Einbinder, 31, were led to an NYPD bus on Thursday (Sept. 24) after sitting in the street blocks from the United Nations, hours before Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the General Assembly.

Comedian Caleb Hearon was detained with them. Police said 103 people were taken into custody.

What happened at the protest near the U.N.?

Jewish Voice for Peace, a progressive Jewish group, organized the sit-in at First Avenue and East 39th Street around 1 p.m. Demonstrators in “Fund people not bombs” T-shirts sat in the roadway to demand an end to U.S. military aid to Israel.

Officers moved in, zip-tied protesters’ hands and loaded them onto buses. Video shows Sarandon being walked out by officers in a black jacket over the white T-shirt.

Others detained included Chelsea Manning, author Glennon Doyle, activist Linda Sarsour, City Council members Chi Ossé, Alexa Avilés and Jennifer Gutiérrez, and congressional candidate Darializa Avila Chevalier. Elliot Page was at the protest and was not detained.

Were Susan Sarandon and Hannah Einbinder arrested?

Yes, in the sense that police took them into custody, but none of them was charged with a crime. All 103 received summonses for disorderly conduct and were released the same day.

Here is how that works in New York. A summons orders the person to appear in court on a later date. Disorderly conduct is a violation, the category below a misdemeanor, and under state law a violation is not a crime at all. Obstructing traffic is one of the ways the law defines it.

The maximum penalty for a violation is 15 days in jail and a $250 fine.

What did Hannah Einbinder and Caleb Hearon say?

Einbinder addressed it in her Instagram story. “Let us not mistake the spectacle for the story: genocide is the headline, and it is time for it to end,” she wrote.

It is not the first time she has made the issue public. Accepting her first Emmy, for playing Ava Daniels on Hacks, in September 2025, she closed her speech with “go Birds,” an expletive aimed at ICE, and “free Palestine.”

Hearon, who plays Miranda Priestly’s assistant Charlie in The Devil Wears Prada 2 and hosts the podcast So True, posted on Thursday that he had been released and thanked the organizers. Sarandon had not commented publicly by Friday afternoon.

How many times has Susan Sarandon been arrested?

At least three times at protests. In 1999 she was arrested in New York in the civil disobedience protests after police killed Amadou Diallo, an unarmed Guinean immigrant. In June 2018 she was one of 575 people arrested in the Hart Senate Office Building protesting the separation of families at the border.

Her stance on Gaza has cost her work. United Talent Agency dropped her in November 2023 after remarks at a pro-Palestinian rally in New York.

At the Venice Film Festival earlier this month, she said it was still happening: “I’ve still had movies taken away recently because there are agencies that are telling people not to hire me still.”
