Who Went Home on ‘Survivor 51’? Aaliyah Puglia Out After a Live Tribal

• Aaliyah Puglia, a 24-year-old chef from Gloucester City, New Jersey, was the first castaway voted out of Survivor 51, by a 6-2 vote on Sept. 23.
• She and Jenna Doore were the two names in play at the season’s first Tribal Council; both gambled on a Shot in the Dark, and neither was safe.

Survivor 51 has its first elimination. Aaliyah Puglia, 24, was voted out at the end of the two-hour premiere on Sept. 23, after the Toka tribe’s first Tribal Council came down to her and Jenna Doore.

The vote was 6-2, and 20 castaways remain. This page is updated after every episode with who went home and why.

Why was Aaliyah voted out of Survivor 51?

Toka lost the season’s first immunity challenge to the other tribe, Savu, which sent Toka to Tribal Council, where players vote someone out. The tribe had lost the most time on Aaliyah’s leg of the obstacle course, untying knots to free a set of balls.

Jenna was the first target. Tribemates found her closed off, and Devin Way doubted she was really a wedding photographer. She is. She told the cameras she is going through a divorce and had shut down.

To save herself, Jenna told Brady Booker, a pro wrestler, that Aaliyah had complained about his intensity during the challenge. Brady started campaigning against Aaliyah, even though Devin, his closest ally, was pushing Jenna.

At Tribal Council, Devin made his vote public. “I am going in that room and I am writing down Jenna, 100%,” he said. Jenna answered: “I’m just not going to give you permission to vote me out.”

Then Patt Cannaday, Jenna’s ally, said the second name out loud: Aaliyah. “I didn’t even know I was on the hot seat,” Aaliyah said. Players got up and started negotiating in the middle of the ceremony, what fans call a live Tribal.

Host Jeff Probst called it “one of the most memorable first Tribal Councils I’ve ever been a witness to.”

Who voted for Aaliyah?

Six of the eight players who voted. Aaliyah and Jenna didn’t have votes: both gave theirs up to play a Shot in the Dark.

Devin had announced his vote for Jenna. In her final words, Aaliyah thanked him and Angelica “Jelly” Loblack, “my No. 1 allies who went to bat for me,” and called going out first “especially embarrassing.”

If those two cast the votes for Jenna, the six against Aaliyah came from the rest of the tribe: Brady, Patt, Mike Pinsky, Maggie Nestor, Danny “Kilby” Kilby and Thien An Nguyen.

She left smiling. “Thanks for allowing me to play with you,” she told the tribe before Probst snuffed her torch.

What happened with the Shot in the Dark?

A Shot in the Dark lets a player give up her vote for a 1-in-6 chance at safety: if the scroll she draws reads “safe,” the votes against her don’t count.

Aaliyah and Jenna both played one, and both scrolls said “not safe.” Every vote against them counted, and the eight remaining ballots decided it.

What is the $1 million coin flip on Survivor?

It is the biggest change in what Probst calls the Open Era, the format that starts with season 51. In his words, anything that has happened on the show “can happen in any season, at any time, in any order — without any warning.”

The twist was introduced in Survivor 50, with an extra $1 million put up by YouTuber MrBeast. The flip raised the prize for whoever won the season, not for the player who flipped it.

Rick Devens volunteered, called heads and landed it. That kept him safe that night and doubled the prize to $2 million, which Aubry Bracco took home when she won the season in May.

“Same rules as 50 with one difference,” Probst told The Hollywood Reporter. Every Open Era season, one player gets the flip. Call it right and that season’s prize becomes $2 million. Call it wrong and the flipper is out of the game on the spot.

The unclaimed million doesn’t disappear. It rolls into season 52, where someone would flip a $2 million coin for a $3 million prize, and it keeps growing “until it pays off and then it’ll start again,” Probst said.

He called it “the most innovative twist in prize money in the history of unscripted television.” Probst told the new cast about the flip in the premiere; nobody has flipped yet.

Other old ideas came back, too. Lewis Kelly, an Irish farmer who lives in Puerto Rico, volunteered to start the game alone on Exile Island. Rob Antonson found a hidden immunity idol, which cancels the votes against whoever plays it, good through the final five.

Who was Finian Shea Johnson?

The premiere closed with a title card in memory of Finian Shea Johnson, an editor who worked behind the scenes on Survivor. He died in May, at 48.

Before Survivor, Johnson spent two decades in reality TV. His website lists him as supervising producer and editor of ABC’s Bachelor franchise, where he led a staff of 15, plus five seasons of NBC’s The Voice and work on The Amazing Race.

He also spent two years cutting movie trailers, including the one for Dave Grohl’s documentary Sound City, and his website says he won an Emmy for a promo.

Who is in the Survivor 51 cast?

Twenty-one first-time players, ages 24 to 49, started the season in Fiji’s Mamanuca Islands. Devin Way is an actor who has appeared on Grey’s Anatomy and planned to keep it secret. Brady Booker has wrestled on WWE NXT as Bodhi Hayward.

The oldest is Kristin Flickinger, 49, who has been applying for 25 years. Mike Pinsky, 32, is a baseball operations executive with the New York Yankees. Lewis Kelly has no tribe yet: he was on Exile Island during the first vote.

When is the next episode of Survivor 51?

Survivor 51 airs Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on CBS, in 90-minute episodes after the two-hour premiere. Episode 2 is on Sept. 30. It streams live on Paramount+ Premium and the next day on every Paramount+ plan.
