  • Sophia Bush, 44, and retired soccer star Ashlyn Harris, 40, have been married since summer 2025, Bush revealed in Vogue on Wednesday, Sept. 30.
  • They wed at a family weekend in upstate New York, with Bush’s best friend officiating and Harris’ two kids there.
  • The wedding is a chapter of Bush’s first memoir, And I Will Tell You Mine, out Oct. 27.

Sophia Bush and Ashlyn Harris are wife and wife, and have been for more than a year. The One Tree Hill star, 44, and the two-time World Cup champion goalkeeper, 40, married in a private ceremony in upstate New York in the summer of 2025.

Bush made it public on Wednesday, Sept. 30, in a Vogue interview with Harris at her side and an excerpt from her memoir, And I Will Tell You Mine: Notes from a Life in Progress, which Flatiron Books publishes Oct. 27.

When did Sophia Bush and Ashlyn Harris get married?

In summer 2025, with almost no planning. In the excerpt, Bush writes that after asking each other “what seemed like a thousand times,” they called city hall and walked in for the license a few days later.

The family was already headed upstate the following weekend, kids included, with a trip to the state fair on the schedule. Bush called her best friend, Nia, who got ordained online that same day. Nia texted her time: two minutes and 36 seconds.

Bush had packed clothes for all the kids and nothing for herself. She found her dress in a basement box: black velvet with gold flecks, worn years earlier to a party with Nia. Harris had packed a tuxedo.

They tucked handwritten vows into a Mary Oliver book and exchanged rings with Harris’ children, Sloane and Ocean, and Bush’s godson around them. “The kids were just running and happy, and we picked flowers from the property and our daughter Sloane was holding them,” Harris told Vogue. That night, the family roasted marshmallows.

Why did they keep the wedding a secret?

Bush said they wanted it to belong to them first. “When you get to this stage in your life, you begin to unpack what’s yours and what’s always sort of been for everyone else,” she told Vogue over Zoom.

She started playing a character for “tens of millions of people” at 21, she said, and Harris has played in front of stadium crowds of 60,000 since she was 15 or 16. After the wedding, the couple traveled to tell friends and family in person. Then came the announcement.

I don’t want to keep sitting on panels or in interviews and being like, ‘My partner.’ You’re not my partner, you know? You’re my wife.

“Partner” was the word in the meantime. Opening a two-part holiday episode of her podcast, Wide Open, recorded on their couch in December 2025, Harris introduced Bush as “someone I’m lucky enough to call my partner.” They had been married for months.

In May 2026, on TODAY with Jenna & Sheinelle, the hosts asked about “your girl Ashlyn Harris” and Mother’s Day. Bush said she had booked Harris “a very long massage” and talked about “falling in love with a mother and being part of a family.”

Harris told Vogue the public part is about visibility: “If we make room and space for one person, that’s worth maybe costing us a little bit of peace in the public eye.” Both sit on the board of the Human Rights Campaign, the LGBTQ+ advocacy group.

How long have Sophia Bush and Ashlyn Harris been together?

About three years. They started dating in fall 2023, weeks after both filed for divorce: Bush from Grant Hughes in August 2023, after 13 months of marriage, and Harris from her former national team teammate Ali Krieger in September 2023, after four years.

They had crossed paths for years through activism, Bush said on Wide Open, from the Time’s Up letter to the U.S. women’s team’s equal pay lawsuit against U.S. Soccer. “Maybe that was our version of invisible string theory,” she said. The phrase comes back in the memoir, at the moment of the vows.

Harris told the story of the first date on Rachel Bilson’s podcast Broad Ideas in March 2025: a dinner in New York that turned into about four hours of walking the city, holding hands.

At one point, she said, she stopped and told Bush, “I thought you were straight.” Bush’s answer, per Harris: “I thought you were happy.”

From there, the dates on the record:

  • April 2024: Bush comes out as queer in a Glamour cover story and confirms the relationship. Two days later, they walk the White House Correspondents’ Dinner red carpet together.
  • Dec. 4, 2024: Harris and Krieger’s divorce is finalized, according to court documents, with shared custody of Sloane and Ocean.
  • January 2025: Bush’s divorce from Hughes is finalized.
  • Summer 2025: the wedding upstate.
  • Sept. 30, 2026: the reveal.

Harris won the World Cup with the U.S. in 2015 and 2019 and retired after Gotham FC’s NWSL title in November 2023. She adopted Sloane in 2021 and Ocean in 2022 with Krieger. Wide Open, which she hosts for iHeartWomen’s Sports, wrapped its first season with Bush as the guest.

What is Sophia Bush’s memoir about?

And I Will Tell You Mine: Notes from a Life in Progress is Bush’s first book. Flatiron Books, an imprint of Macmillan, publishes it on Oct. 27 at a list price of $28.

According to the publisher, it covers her childhood in Los Angeles, the decade on One Tree Hill, marriage and divorce in the spotlight, and her years in Chicago on Chicago P.D. She told People her book agent asked her to write one for a decade, and “for nine years, I said no.”

Harris is her third spouse. Bush married her One Tree Hill co-star Chad Michael Murray in 2005, and they split five months later.

In the excerpt, a friend asks how she can still believe in marriage. Bush writes that she would rather “get divorced all over again” someday than miss the chance to be married to Harris at all.
