  • Tyler Perry’s Doing Life, a drama Perry wrote, directed and produced, premiered on Netflix on Friday, Oct. 2.
  • Naomi Baker plays Anika, a former corrections officer and single mother; Jay Reeves plays Carousel, the inmate who saved her during a prison riot.
  • Early reviews are mixed: some critics call it emotional, others predictable and short on chemistry between the leads.

Second chances, Tyler Perry style. Tyler Perry’s Doing Life landed on Netflix on Friday, Oct. 2, a romantic drama about a single mother and a man coming out of prison that Perry wrote, directed and produced. It runs 1 hour and 48 minutes.

Netflix’s logline sells it as “a gritty and gripping urban drama” about “a single mother fighting for survival and a reformed ex-con with untapped talents who forge an unexpected bond.”

What is ‘Doing Life’ about?

Naomi Baker plays Anika, a corrections officer caught in a violent prison riot who is rescued by an inmate, Carousel, played by Jay Reeves. Years later she has left the job and is a single mother struggling to hold her family together, financially and emotionally.

The two start writing letters. When Carousel gets out and works to rebuild his life, the friendship turns into a romance, and Anika’s protective older sister, Lisa, and the people around her push back on it. The title borrows prison slang for serving a life sentence.

Who is in the cast of ‘Doing Life’?

  • Naomi Baker as Anika. She was in All American: Homecoming.
  • Jay Reeves as Carousel. He worked with Perry before on The Six Triple Eight.
  • Jasmine Sargent as Lisa, Anika’s older sister.
  • Tamberla Perry as Cathy, Karen Obilom as Trina and Danielle Moné Truitt as Denise.
  • Cornell Young IV as Donovan. He is also set to star in Netflix’s A Different World sequel.

Angi Bones and Tony L. Strickland, two of Perry’s regular collaborators, produced with him.

Is ‘Doing Life’ based on a true story?

No. Perry wrote it as an original script, and Netflix has not presented it as based on real events. It belongs to the run of dramas he makes under his Netflix deal, alongside A Fall from Grace, Mea Culpa and The Six Triple Eight.

What are critics saying about ‘Doing Life’?

It splits them. Scenes in Colour called it “an emotional and powerful film about love, survival and more.” The Sunday Guardian gave it 3.5 stars and found it “emotional but often too predictable,” and K-Waves and Beyond said the romance “feels too forced” to work.

Chemistry is the other recurring complaint: one review described odd pauses between Baker and Reeves in their scenes together. As of Oct. 3, Rotten Tomatoes had logged only two critic reviews, too few for a score.

Tyler Perry’s Doing Life is streaming on Netflix. Also new this week: the true story behind Netflix’s The Widower, Netflix’s East of Eden and every new Netflix movie in October. More in Movies & TV.
