Nigella Lawson’s ‘Great British Baking Show’ Debut: Why Prue Leith Left

Nigella Lawson has taken her seat in the tent. The Great British Baking Show returned to Netflix on Friday (Sept. 25) with the British cookbook star, 66, judging alongside Paul Hollywood in place of Prue Leith, who stepped down in January.

Her first episode ended with nobody going home.

Why did Prue Leith leave ‘The Great British Baking Show’?

Because of the calendar. Leith announced on Jan. 21 that she was stepping down after nine series and more than 400 challenges. “Now feels like the right time to step back (I’m 86 for goodness sake!),” she said in her statement, adding that she wanted to “spend summers enjoying my garden.”

The show films on weekends through the spring and summer, one episode at a time, so the bakers can keep their day jobs. For the judges, that means no summer off.

Leith spelled it out on ITV’s Lorraine in February. “I suddenly realized I will never again have a summer holiday in Europe,” she said. “It was important to leave Bake Off while I still have enough energy to enjoy my life.”

Who is Nigella Lawson, the new judge?

A British food writer and TV cook, best known for the books How to Eat (1998) and How to Be a Domestic Goddess (2000). American viewers know her from Food Network’s Nigella Feasts and from ABC’s cooking competition The Taste, where she was a judge with Anthony Bourdain from 2013 to 2015.

Channel 4 named her on Jan. 26. “I’m uncharacteristically rather lost for words right now!” she said then. “Of course it’s daunting to be following in the footsteps of Prue Leith and Mary Berry before her, great dames both.”

A few days later, she told ITV’s This Morning she was “a teeny bit frightened,” and drew the line between herself and Hollywood: he is “Mr. Technical,” she said, while “I’m all about the eating.”

Online chatter that the two didn’t get along did not last. “It surprised even us, I think, how well we hit it off,” Lawson told The Guardian this month.

Leith said on This Morning in August that her only advice was “to just enjoy it,” and that she had seen Lawson and Hollywood together: “they’re getting on fine.”

Who went home on ‘The Great British Baking Show’ this week?

No one. Week 1 was Cake Week: chocolate stout cakes in the signature, a coffee and walnut cake in the technical, and a self-portrait cake in the showstopper.

Shannon, a 29-year-old project planner from Gloucestershire, fell ill during the showstopper and couldn’t finish. “We thought the fairest thing was to bring everybody back next week, and go from there,” Lawson said in the episode.

Mo, a 21-year-old law student from the West Midlands, was named the first Star Baker for a peanut and caramel chocolate stout cake and a lemon sponge with Swiss meringue buttercream and blueberry compote.

Biscuit Week is next. New episodes air Tuesdays on Channel 4 in the U.K. and arrive on Netflix in the U.S. the following Friday. This season also brings an Audience Choice Week, a fashion-themed challenge and family members lending the bakers a hand.
